Frequently Asked Questions

What is a full grant?
A full grant provides creative/marketing services, to be performed by Causality, at no cost to the organization for the scope of services requested.

What is a matching grant?
A matching grant provides a portion of the value of creative/marketing services at no cost to the organization for the scope of services requested. The organization must be able to contribute or raise a sum equal to the value of the match to be provided by Causality.

Is it possible to secure other funding for the match? What help can you provide?
Absolutely. Many past matching grant recipients have leveraged the matching grant opportunity to approach donors, sponsors or funders to fund the match—allowing them to receive the full scope of services at no cost to their organization. We provide consultation and matching grant documentation to help your organization in approaching potential funders. Should your organization be interested in pursuing this as a means to receive branding/marketing/interactive services for your organization at no cost, we will be happy to assist.

What kinds of things does the brand grant provide?
The Causality Brand Grant is a service grant that encompasses the full range of brand marketing and creative services that we provide on a regular basis:

  • Brand assessment
  • Brand development
  • Naming (organizations/programs/services)
  • Messaging
  • Marketing materials
  • Appeals
  • Campaigns
  • Case statements
  • Fundraising communications
  • Web site design and development
  • Email marketing/social marketing tools
  • Event branding
  • Annual reports
  • Newsletters

What kinds of things does the brand grant NOT cover?
It does not cover out-of-pocket expenses such as printing, postage, hosting, etc. nor does it provide actual dollars to pay for services outside of Causality's range of services.

If I am awarded a grant will I receive a check for the amount?
No, the Causality Brand Grant is a services grant meaning that the organization will receive the amount of the grant in services that our staff will perform under the scope of work of the awarded grant.

Can I apply for both types of grant at the same time?
Yes, you can apply for both a full and matching grant at the same time on the same application. Check both boxes and be sure to indicate the amount of for the matching grant. If your application is not chosen to receive a full grant it will automatically be considered for remaining matching grants.

Can I apply for a brand grant for more than one project?
Yes, you can apply for a brand grant for more than one project.

How many grants do you award?
Because we are a small firm and we never want to over promise and under deliver, we only award one full grant per cycle but we do award a minimum of three matching grants per cycle. Our goal is to make good branding accessible to as many organizations as possible—those who might otherwise not have the resources. As such we are committed to doing everything we can to NOT turn down a reasonable matching application.

How often do you have grant application cycles?
We initially developed the Causality Brand Grant program to be twice a year, however we’ve had such a tremendous response, we plan to offer the grant program quarterly.

Do we have to be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit?
This opportunity is available for a broad range of organizations and causes that contribute to the greater good... including 501(c)(3) nonprofits, social enterprises, education, faith-based and other "mission-driven" organizations including start-up nonprofits who have not yet filed for 501(c)(3) status.

Is there a time frame or deadline to complete the work by?
We allow up to 6 months from start to completion for the scope of work covered by the grant. The time frame is based on the actual services to be performed. We work with each organization to develop an mutually acceptable timeline for completion.

What if we think our project will take longer or what if we won’t be able to start the project by the start date?
We strive to be flexible and accessible and will work on a case-by-case basis to develop a workable project timeline.

How do we determine our funding amount for a matching grant request?
A matching grant is based on a mutually agreeable scope of work where the organization contributes or raises 50% of the value of the services. There are two ways to approach this:

  1. You can identify your needs as a “wish list” and propose the dollar amount of the match you'd be able to contribute or raise. We would evaluate your request to see if we can fulfill the requested services with the match amount you’ve proposed. From there, we would offer the match for the scope of work as requested, or we would offer an alternate scope of work (which you are free to accept or decline).
  2. or
  3. We can have a conversation about what your needs are and then develop a more detailed scope of work with an estimate for the full value of those services—half of the estimate amount would be the match amount the organization would need to contribute or raise.
The latter provides more clear expectations and an upfront amount but some prefer to put their "wish list" and amount of their match. We try very hard not to turn away any matching grant applicants... we work very hard to work within each organization’s budget and to make our services accessible to organizations of all size.

How will I know if my “wish list” exceeds the matching grant amount? Will my application be disqualified?
No. We try very hard not to turn away any matching grant applicants. If we receive a matching grant request where the services requested exceed what we believe we can successfully provide for the match amount, we will offer an alternate scope of work for your consideration. Our goal is to work with you to develop a mutually agreeable scope of services and match amount.

What is the dollar amount/value of a brand grant?
There is no specific dollar amount for the full grant since it is a service grant that encompasses the full range of brand marketing and creative services that we provide on a regular basis. It does not cover out-of-pocket expenses such as printing, postage, hosting, etc. nor does it provide actual dollars to pay for services outside of Causality's range of services. Our advisory committee chooses one applicant to receive the full scope of services they've applied for at no cost to them, much like a pro bono project. In the past the values (for full and matching) have ranged from $1,000 to $35,000.
